Netbook, iPad or Android Tablet Computers: Which Tool is Right for your Student?

The development of netbook and tablet computers such as the iPad has opened up new possibilities for students who require assistive technology to access the curriculum. The aim of this presentation is to assist parents, teachers and therapists to identify which device best suits the student’s needs.

The presentation will include:

  • A discussion of the different features of netbook and tablet computers
  • An overview of the software and “Apps” that are able to support classroom activities
  • A look at workstation set up for students using a netbook or tablet computer
  • Case studies of students who are working with a netbook or tablet computer in the classroom
  • Opportunities to ask questions and “play with the equipment

Jessica Rigden is an Occupational Therapist working at the Independent Living Centre (ILC) of WA. She works across both the ILC Tech and Assistive Equipment Service to deliver information and training on assistive equipment. Jessica has a strong commitment to improving access to computers and telecommunications for people with disabilities. Jessica has previously worked for Rocky Bay’s Therapy and Professional Services working with children and adults with neuromuscular conditions.

Evana Jacobson has worked as an Occupational Therapist for over 10 years in a variety of areas. Since joining the Independent Living Centre in 2007 she has managed to move into the exciting area of Information and Communication Technologies or Tech as we like to call it. Evana enjoys the gadgets and opportunities this area has to offer, and hopes from this presentation you’ll discover your inner geek or at least lose some of your technophobia.
